Tournament happen whenever there are 14 (or 7 in some cases, or 28 in backgammon) players who want to play. Championships happen once a year. Both start with group play, everyone plays everyone in their group. Championship usually are larger. Tournaments take the top 2 in each group into a knockout round consisting of 4 games. Championship may take more than the to 2 into the knockout round. Typically the final round of a championship has 8 games (rather than just 4).
