Just a tip: If you're a beginner, the money for a teacher is wasted. You have much better options to learn the game right now.

1) Get real-time games. The best one for beginners is KGS. A proberb says: "Lose 100 games as quick as possible".

2) A great resource to learn the basics including a course and plenty of tsumego is available at 321go.org

3) Check out the pages for beginners at Sensei's Library, the largest wiki about go.

4) After you have done these, get some good books. One book is about the same price as taking a lesson of one hour with a teacher. Surely you can get more out of these books (there are lots of recommendations at Sensei's). Do this until you have no more progress for several months.

Only after that it's worth taking a teacher.

Somehow I get the feeling DarkElf would like to play with someone who is willing to teach him a little bit more while playing........ No reallife teacher.

Hey DarkElf,

I pretty much agree with karaklis, though I'm also a complete beginner. On the other hand, I know exactly what you're going through, and we've already meet on the tournament, which comprised my very first games; all my knowledge of Go consisted on reading The Interactive Way To Go, and as you could appreciate, it was more than enough to grasp the basics. Smile 321Go seems like a good start too, being more modern and better structured, besides having many more resources.

I would refrain from recommending KGS however. Though probably the most popular server on the west, their sell to Kiseido within one month and the switch to a closed protocol gives them bad karma. Razz

You can always take a quick look to the many available and pick your own.

Being in Ubuntu Linux, it took me a few clicks in the Software Center to find and install qGo, a very nice interface to play online (I choose the revered IGS server); GNU Go, an AI to play against in qGo; and uliGo for solving problems --I really like that you can keep on playing after solving the problem, unlike online sites like http://www.goproblems.com/ (which are still good nonetheless). With Ubuntu's automated updates, I'm set for life. Wink

I had always disregarded Go as some kind of oversized Reversi, and I was greatly surprised when I found out it's actual complexity and depth. And the surprise is turning more and more pleasant as I start to feel the "vertigo" of walking through every new level of it's delicate balances. I can already tell that really learning the game, so you can understand (at least a little) what's going on on a pro game for example, takes lots of study and effort, but as long as you go at your own pace and have fun along the way, it should be a thoroughly enjoyable and enriching experience. And you can't get started much better than with the excellent pointers given by karaklis. Once you've a solid grasp of the basics, then it will be worth it to "bother" trying to understand a game or asking questions.

May your stones flow like rain. Smile

Well, they have not been associated with Kiseido for pretty much 4 years now, so I'm not sure how relevant that is now Wink

I agree with karaklis, an excellent set of recommendations to get going with the game (sorry for the pun!), and see you on the board sometime.
