What do you think about an open variant, i.e. without the lakes?

On xxxxxxx.com and xxxxxxxxx it was successful to introduce open variants of sabotage/espionage. They are IMHO better than those with blocked squares. But OTOH these games are not quite the same as strategy.

Open versions really make the game much more strategic and require a lot of patience. I've been playing the open version for over 10 years and ill tell you its very very different than with lakes. Of the 6 different variations open I think is the 2nd most difficult.

From my experience, the volcano versions require more patience. It is like playing through keyholes. I don't like it, and it is sometimes difficult to make progress.

IMO the open variants give more free space for the attacking player, while the volcanoes tend to support the defensive. One more reason why I like the open versions better.
